The early twentieth-century history of Singapore is a story of a metropolis grappling with a crisis in urban management. As a result of global and revolutionary economic and social changes, and unprecedented technological and industrial developments, Singapore faced the challenges of rapid urbanization.

The city’s recovery was to be achieved through decentralization and the construction of a structure composed of residential, work, and recreational spaces. These areas would be integrated into a harmonious whole, connected by an extensive transportation system.

Krystyn Olszewski, a Polish architect and urban planner, played a significant role in this transformation. His work contributed to the development of Singapore’s spatial layout. The long-term, systematic, and consistent spatial planning initiated at that time became the foundation for the construction of the modern city. Singapore’s urban planning concept reflects not only its past but also its future, as it faces the challenges of the 21st century.
